Youth Municipality of the Year

Each year the Swedish National Board for Youth Affairs awards the distinction 'Youth Municipality of the Year' to draw attention to the work of local government in improving young people's living conditions.

In choosing the Youth Municipality of the Year we look especially at how local authorities have worked to:

  • develop methods to strengthen young people's participation and influence in cooperation with youth clubs and other associations

  • increase the inclusion of all young people in society

  • develop methods to improve knowledge about young people's needs

  • strengthen club and association activities for the benefit of young people.

The winning municipality receives 150,000 Swedish crowns (over 14,000 euros) to go towards continued development and progress. Local authorities must consult with young people in deciding how the money is to be used.

'Youth Municipality of the Year' distinction raises the status of youth issues

We spoke to an earlier winner of the award and asked the municipality to share some memories and experiences from the time as Youth Municipality of the Year.
